As the UK moves from crisp autumn days into the colder winter months, your skin can become drier, tighter, and harder to prep for makeup. As a hair and makeup artist, I always remind clients that great makeup starts with well-hydrated skin — and winter is when your routine matters most.
This quick guide shares the key skincare swaps to keep your complexion smooth, nourished, and winter-ready, from richer moisturisers to gentler cleansers and hydrating serums. Let’s make sure your skin stays glowing all season long.
What to swap from (summer / warm-weather routine)
• Lightweight, gel- or water-based moisturizers or lotions
• Foaming or gel cleansers (often good in humid weather, but drying in winter)
• Frequent exfoliation or stronger acids (can be too harsh when skin is dry)
What to swap to in fall/winter
• Cream- or oil-based cleansers — These cleanse without stripping away the skin’s natural oils.
• Richer moisturizers or creams — Preferably with barrier-repairing or occlusive ingredients (for example ceramides, shea butter, glycerin, squalane or plant oils) to lock in moisture and protect from dryness.
• Hydrating serums or facial oils — Serums with humectants (like hyaluronic acid) or oils that add extra moisture help counteract the drying effect of cold, dry air.
• Night creams or overnight masks / balms — Nighttime is a great time for deeper nourishment and skin repair while you sleep.
• Lip balm / hand and body creams (if needed) — Cold weather can dry out lips, hands, and other skin; applying protective balm or richer creams can help prevent chapping or cracking.
• Still use sunscreen — but possibly a milder or moisturizer-integrated SPF — Even on cold or overcast days, UV rays can affect skin, so don’t skip SPF just because it’s winter.
Some Example Product Types to Consider (for winter-ready skin)
• Gentle, hydrating cleanser instead of foaming gel.
• Moisturizer with ceramides, glycerin, oils, or shea butter/hydrating emollients.A hydrating serum or facial oil to layer under moisturizer.
• Night cream or a “sleep mask” for overnight skin barrier repair.
• Lip balm for dry/chapped lips.
